As its name suggests Warranwood is located between Warrandyte and Ringwood. Originally primarily an orchard and grazing community surrounded by a heavily treed environment, Warranwood slowly developed from the 1940s, often as a semi-rural retreat from the suburbanism of nearby Ringwood.

Until the 1980s development was low-scale, sporadic and on larger blocks, still essentially within a bushland setting.

The subdivision of old grazing and orchard properties from the 1980s introduced a more modern style of brick veneer home.

The locality is particularly popular because of the close proximity of schools such as Luther, Rudolf Steiner and Yarra Valley Grammar as well as highly regarded primary schools.
