Park Orchards

Park Orchards

Park Orchards is a quiet, little known, locality between Ringwood North and Warrandyte.

Originally part of the large orcharding area which stretched from Doncaster through to Ringwood, it was the subject of ‘Park Orchards Country Club Estate’, launched in 1925. Given the circular nature of the Estate, it is often wrongly attributed as the work of Walter Burley Griffin, although there still was a connection. The estate was designed by Saxil Tuxen, the surveyor who worked with Griffin in his subdivisions in Mount Eliza and Heidelberg.

The club house for the estate – later known as the Park Orchards Chalet – was built in 1928 but the subdivision languished; as depression lead into World War II, the Chalet was requisitioned by the army as a signals station. After the war, the area started to develop slowly. It was not until the 1980s that the original ‘Park Orchards Country Club Estate’ blocks were largely built on and some peripheral subdivisions took place.

Park Orchards is coveted for its large blocks – mainly 2,000 square metres and above, its seclusion and tranquillity, not withstanding its close proximity to the Eastern Freeway and EastLink, and for its undoubted sense of community.
